Children's Sermon: God's Vacation

This children’s sermon begins with a familiar idea—vacations—and gently leads children to the reassurance found in Psalm 121:3–4 that God never steps away from caring for them.
Theme: Loving Others • God watches over us
Best for ages: 5–10
Supplies (optional but recommended):
  • paper “eye” cutouts, stickers, or large wiggle eyes (one per child) or...
  • You can order 32 Eye Finger Puppets for about $7. Just be sure to wait until the end of the lesson before you give themout, or you will lose their attention. Check the price below.
Introduction

Do you go on vacation?

Vacations are when we take a break. People go on trips, rest, and stop working for a while because they need a break.

Do you think God goes on vacation?

You might think, “Yes—because on the seventh day God rested.”

The Message

That’s true—God did rest on the seventh day. But that doesn’t mean God was tired.

In the Bible, God’s “rest” means He stopped creating because His work was finished and complete. He was showing people a pattern—work, then rest—and making that day special.

So no—that wasn’t really “God’s vacation.” God wasn’t taking time off from being God and watching over us.

Now listen to what Psalm 121 says:

3 He will not let your foot slip—
he who watches over you will not slumber;

4 indeed, he who watches over Israel
will neither slumber nor sleep.
— Psalm 121:3–4

This tells us something amazing: God doesn’t even need a vacation. God never sleeps. And God does not take a break from watching over you.

Challenge

Everyone close your eyes for just two seconds…

(Pause briefly.)

Now open them!

When your eyes were closed, you couldn’t see—but Psalm 121 tells us that God never slumbers or sleeps.

(Hand each child one of the eyes you brought.)

Take-home reminder: When you go home today, place this eye in a place where you’ll see it—on your nightstand, in your backpack, or on the refrigerator.

Let it remind you:

  • God watches over you.
  • God never sleeps.
  • God cares for us at all times.
Prayer

Dear God,
Thank you for always watching over us.
Thank you that You never sleep.
Help us trust Your care.
Amen.
