Best for ages: 5–10
- Artificial fall leaves (one per child)
Have you noticed how leaves change colors in the fall?
In the summer, leaves are green because they are full of chlorophyll. Chlorophyll helps plants make food using sunlight, and it gives leaves their green color.
When autumn comes, the days get shorter and cooler. Trees don’t need as much food anymore, so the chlorophyll slowly drains away. When the green fades, the other colors—reds, oranges, yellows, and browns—finally show through.
The colors were there all along. We just couldn’t see them yet.
People are a little like autumn leaves.
God made each of us with our own gifts, personalities, and ways of caring for others. Sometimes we try to hide who we really are or copy someone else because we want to fit in.
But God doesn’t ask us to be the same. He asks us to be loving, kind, and true to who we are.
When we choose kindness, help someone in need, or forgive, our true colors show.
Now I’m going to give each of you a fall leaf.
(Hand out one artificial leaf to each child.)
No two leaves are exactly the same—and that’s what makes them beautiful.
When you go home today, take your leaf and place it somewhere you’ll see it.
- God made you special
- Your true colors show when you choose kindness
- Loving others makes the world more beautiful
“Let your light shine before others.” — Matthew 5:16
Dear God,
Thank you for making each of us special.
Help us show our true colors by loving others every day.
Amen.
