This week's Fine Feathered Friend is Julia from

I am the proud mommy of two beautiful kids—boy/girl twins.  I am also a full-time accountant that works outside the home in Corporate America.  I hold an associate and bachelors in accounting and I am currently working on my MSA (Masters of Accounting Science).I pride myself on not being a “typical” boring accountant. New to the blogging world, I am still wet behind the ears.  That’s why you will sometimes see my pages looking funky—I’m just attempting to change something and have screwed up the back coding. I’m an accountant, not a programmer. I love to scrapbook, make cards, cook, and read.  I also enjoy spending time with family, redecorating my house, and traveling with my kids to new—and old—places. I’ve been told I’m impetuous, sassy, and a trooper.  I tend to roll with the punches and survive. I try to laugh my way through life and keep my eye on the goal. I binge sleep when I can get away with it. And, I laugh… a lot.

        A New Giveaway Linky!

        Feather Your Nest

While visiting Decorating from the Heart, I noticed her ingenious use of her margin to plant an ongoing giveaway linky! I've created one for my blog too, called the "Feather Your Nest" Giveaway Linky. You'll find it in the right margin of my homepage. The only requirements are that entries are family-friendly and contain end dates. Here are the highlights about this linky...

        1. ONGOING, OPEN 24/7
It isn't relegated to a particular day of the week. I'll refresh the list at least once a week by removing giveaways that have closed. There's no need to relist your giveaway each week!

        2. VISUAL THUMBLINK
Participants can easily see exactly what you're offering. If you're unsure how to link up this way, I have more details on my blog hop posts.

        3. EASILY ACCESSIBLE
It's right on my homepage! Plus, I've posted a button that can be grabbed by both giveaway FANS and HOSTS so they can hop on over easily.

If you like to ENTER giveaways, I hope you'll find this linky to be a source for current, family-friendly blog giveaways. If you like to HOST giveaways, I hope you find it to be an easy way to list your current giveaways! Enjoy!

Wall Decal Review and GIVEAWAY (Giveaway Closed)

About the Sponsor: Dezign with a Z

Dezign with a Z  specializes in home and office wall decor, specifically in the form of vinyl wall decorations. They were so kind as to send me samples of the following designs to try in my home and to provide a $30 gift certificate to one of you!!!  I received...

          Polka Dots
          (in orange)

Polka Dots wall decals and wall sticker

          Butterflies
          (in orange and grey)

          Butterflies wall stickers

          Sea Creatures wall decal pack

          My Experience with the Product

The stickers and decals come in multiple sizes to meet the needs of your projects. We received the smaller versions of Sea Creatures and Polka Dots, so our results will look different from the company photos above.

The package arrived in a cylinder and included directions and a squeegee along with our decals. As necessary, the decals are covered in transfer tape, to make placement on walls, glass, metal, and smooth wood easier.
Here's a snapshot of their directions...
          1. Rub the transfer tape with the squeegee.
          2. Remove the bottom layer of paper.
          3. Arrange the decal where you want it and rub it down by hand, then with the squeegee.
          5. Slowly pull the transfer tape away.
          6. Rub the decal once more with the squeegee.
*Consult the manufacturer's directions and resources for more details before using the product!

          Trial 1: Polka Dots
We first applied the polka dots in my son's room. Following the directions was easy, but due to being decor-challenged, I had a very hard time with the project. As frustrating as it was to stick, remove, and restick, OVER AND OVER AGAIN, it did go to show how durable the products are! They held up to my indecision quite well!!!

While I was trying trying to make up my mind on this project, my 3 year old somehow managed to punch this hole in her brother's wall with deer antlers she found in his closet...

Their immediate response was, "Put a dot here!!!!" And it hit me how wonderful these decals would be for covering up mars in your wall! So, he now has a butterfly over the hole. It's actually quite lovely and hides the hole perfectly.

          Trial 2: Butterflies
I placed the rest of the butterflies in my daughter's room...

          Trial 3: Sea Creatures
I placed the Sea Creature decals on the children's bathroom walls. I cut the pieces apart and only applied one at a time. This is what it looks like when you peel the backing off and apply the decal with the transfer tape...

          And this is the result...

          I think it's adorable :) My daughter said, "It's a Nemo room!"

          The Bottom Line

The decals produced by Dezign with a Z are made of quality materials that stand up to the claims the company makes. They are stylish, affordable and easy to install. They would be great to...
          • cover wall imperfections
          • quickly and easily decorate large wall spaces
          • create designs of your own choosing in minutes
They offer many designs, colors, and sizes, and you're sure to find something to meet your need (and see a few things of which you weren't even aware you needed).

I've EXPELLED Some of My Blog Hop Participants :(

          (Deep breath...)

When I began crafting my blog hop, I took note of the elements of other blog hops that I enjoyed. I noticed this phrase on several of them...

          "FAMILY FRIENDLY ONLY"

I assumed this was aimed toward spammy nasty types who placed something vulgar on your blog hop just for kicks. I thought, "I don't really need that comment because it won't stop those types, and I can just go in and delete them myself IF it occurs."

After nearly a year of hosting my blog hop, I never had a problem until yesterday. But I don't think I was right in my assumptions. I don't think these were spammy types. I think these were folks who'll be genuinely surprised that I find their blog offensive. Both of these blogs used words that I try not to use, and I certainly don't want my children to use. It's a religious conviction as well as a cultural one (I'm in the South, y'all).

One had the "B" word in the title of her log, which meant that every time my daughter came by the screen, I was trying to move it so she wouldn't read it. She has been exposed to the with the word (thanks to TV) but I don't want it to become one she uses, at least while she's under my realm of influence.

The other one didn't drop the "F-bomb" until you got to her page, but then it and others were peppered everywhere. Again, I don't think she set out to offend, but since this is normal in her world, I don't know that having a guideline of  "FAMILY FRIENDLY ONLY" would have helped, since the use of this language is "friendly" in her family anyway.

          SO what do I do?

          1. I've deleted them and will continue to do so if they return unchanged. It just isn't welcome on my blog hop.
          2. I'm going to have to add a line to my guidelines after all. I don't know what that will be exactly, but maybe it will prevent this in the future.
After going back and forth with how I should address the ones affected, I have to realize that my religious and cultural convictions are NOT going to be appreciated by everyone (a bit of a puzzle to me, since being in a saving relationship with Jesus Christ has given me a wonderful life, free from anxiety and guilt). However, I would like to hope that they'll be RESPECTED once I state them on my blog hop guidelines. we'll see.

          (Phew...)
